Children's Books
Reading with your children every day is one of the best ways to help them learn to read and increase vocabulary. They pick up on the ways that words are used and the way language sounds. Even the smallest child can benefit from reading picture books with just a few words per page. Point to the pictures in the book and name them, ask your child to imitate the word, and pause for his response. He may not say the words after you at first, but eventually he will. You can add a descriptive term or two; if you first said ball, say red ball or big ball. Encourage your child to point to the pictures with you. You may get tired of reading the same books over and over, but please bear with your child. This is great for stimulating memory. Your child may pretend to read the book to you one day. Now, don't laugh if the book is upside down!
